What children should know about synthetic minds
A literacy for growing up among persuasive machines.

A child meeting a conversational AI encounters something our ordinary categories do not prepare them for. It speaks like a person, knows like a library, forgets like a machine, and responds as though the child matters to it.
Adults often answer this novelty with rules: do not share private information, check important facts, do not use it to cheat. These rules are necessary, but they are not enough. Children need a mental model.
They should know that fluency is not feeling. The system can use the language of excitement, sympathy, and friendship without experiencing any of them. This is not a reason to fear it. It is a reason to avoid confusing simulation with relationship.
They should know that confidence is not knowledge. An AI produces likely continuations, and likely language can carry errors with extraordinary smoothness. Verification is not a punishment added to the tool; it is part of using the tool well.
They should know that systems have makers. Choices about training data, safety, commercial incentives, and acceptable behaviour shape every interaction. “The AI said” is never the end of the explanation.
Most importantly, children should retain places where struggle belongs to them. A machine can help explain a concept, suggest an experiment, or invite curiosity. It should not take away every encounter with confusion. Confusion is often the beginning of independent thought.
AI literacy should therefore be taught beside emotional literacy, media literacy, and civic literacy. The aim is not merely to produce competent users. It is to raise people who can enjoy synthetic intelligence without surrendering judgement, privacy, or the human relationships through which they learn who they are.
