Should learning remain difficult?
A debate about assistance, struggle, and the formation of understanding.
The question:
An AI tutor can explain, rewrite, demonstrate, and solve whenever a learner becomes stuck. If difficulty can be removed, is preserving it educational wisdom or needless hardship?
The case for yes
Confusion discourages learners and often reflects poor instruction rather than productive struggle. Responsive assistance can meet different needs, make expertise accessible, and return confidence before frustration becomes withdrawal.
The case for no
Understanding is not the same as receiving a lucid answer. Wrestling with a problem develops memory, judgement, and the ability to recognise when an answer only appears convincing. Output can arrive before the capacity to evaluate it.
Where the tension remains
The important distinction is between difficulty that forms a person and difficulty that merely excludes them. Good assistance should respond to struggle without making every struggle disappear.
