Where does expertise come from when AI does the work?
A debate about productivity, apprenticeship, and professional judgement.
The question:
If AI performs more entry-level research, drafting, analysis, and production, how will beginners acquire the judgement required to supervise it later?
The case for yes
Removing routine labour can let newcomers observe stronger examples, attempt ambitious work earlier, and spend more time on interpretation rather than mechanical execution. Work should not remain inefficient merely because earlier generations learned that way.
The case for no
Junior tasks are often where professionals learn what to notice. Repetition and repair build tacit standards that cannot be acquired by approving polished outputs alone. Automating the bottom may leave no one capable of responsibility at the top.
Where the tension remains
Workplaces will need to design for formation deliberately: alternating assisted production with unaided practice, explanation, reconstruction, and real responsibility appropriate to experience.
